The memory

Before the current renaissance, there was Henry Vaccaro's relentless push to save Asbury Park. And right there in the thick of it, operating out of the First Avenue Pavilion on the boardwalk, was Sandy's Arcade & Playland, run by his son, Henry Vaccaro Jr. Sandy's was a critical hub in the late 1980s and early 1990s—a necessary distraction in a city fighting for its life. The biggest story here is what Sandy's inherited: after the legendary Palace Amusements closed its doors in November 1988, its most iconic, quarter-gobbling machine—the original Palace photo booth—was moved right into Sandy's Arcade. This arcade, located where the Cubacan restaurant is now, carried the torch of boardwalk amusement when everything else was crumbling. It was a loud, chaotic, and necessary link between the old Asbury and the promise of the new. If you remember dropping tokens here, you were a witness to a pivotal, messy moment in Shore history. Don't let that memory die.
