Calico the Clown. Middletown. Route 35, Since 1956.
Towering over Route 35 since 1956, Calico was the original mascot for the Food Circus supermarket chain—designed by Leslie Worth Thomas, the same artist behind Tillie. With his eerie grin and blood-red fingertip, the 22-foot rotating clown became a local legend, dubbed the “Evil Clown of Middletown.” He’s outlasted the store, gentrification, and every wrecking ball that’s threatened him.

Step back to the Long Branch Pier, bought in April 1979 by Pat Cicalese and Carmen Ricci, which became a hub of entertainment. A boardwalk dive with grit, grease, and gold. Located at First and Ocean, the Golddigger Grill served up late-night eats and cold beers to generations of locals, bikers, and Asbury misfits. Owned by Chuck Haberl, it was a staple stop on the legendary weekend cruising “Circuit” until it closed in ’92. This shirt brings it back—loud, proud, and no apologies.
