For nearly six decades, the Inkwell sat at 2 different locations on Second Avenue in Long Branch. More bohemian Greenwich Village than Starbucks chain, it served up late-night Dutch Coffee, grilled chicken salad (with meunster!) on pita, and goth‑tinged open‑mic nights—often past 4 a.m.

Avon's a small town, and the Norwood Inn was built for that scale — a familiar name on a familiar street, the kind of inn locals recommended to family before they thought to recommend anything else. It didn't need to be famous outside of Avon to matter inside it.

Calico the Clown. Middletown. Route 35, Since 1956.
Towering over Route 35 since 1956, Calico was the original mascot for the Food Circus supermarket chain—designed by Leslie Worth Thomas, the same artist behind Tillie. With his eerie grin and blood-red fingertip, the 22-foot rotating clown became a local legend, dubbed the “Evil Clown of Middletown.” He’s outlasted the store, gentrification, and every wrecking ball that’s threatened him.

The Pier Pub. Long Branch Pier. 1982.
Step back to the Long Branch Pier, bought in April 1979 by Pat Cicalese and Carmen Ricci, which became a hub of entertainment. Midway up this pier stood the Pier Pub, initially leased to Fran Marincola as a basic bar catering to locals and fishermen. Recognizing the shift towards DJ-driven nightlife, Marincola undertook a significant renovation.

The Melody Bar, located on French Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey, was a vibrant live music and dance club that operated from March 1981 until its sudden closure in 2001. A boardwalk dive with grit, grease, and gold. Located at First and Ocean, the Golddigger Grill served up late-night eats and cold beers to generations of locals, bikers, and Asbury misfits. Owned by Chuck Haberl, it was a staple stop on the legendary weekend cruising “Circuit” until it closed in ’92. This shirt brings it back—loud, proud, and no apologies.

Temptations Nite Club, also known as Tempts, was a legendary nightlife spot located in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. It was a popular destination for party-goers from the 1980s until its closure in the early 2000s. The club was owned by the well-known nightlife entrepreneur, Denny Tsettos, who was also a prominent DJ and music producer.

A beach club needs a name that sounds like vacation even on a Tuesday, and Tradewinds delivered — cabanas, a pool maybe, a strip of sand rented out by the season to families who came back to the same spot every summer. Sea Bright had a run of clubs like it, private stretches of a public coastline.

Maxwell's ran a back room in Hoboken that punched way above its size — bands who could have played bigger rooms played there anyway, because word was it sounded right and the crowd knew how to listen. It closed years ago, and Hoboken hasn't had a real replacement since.

Once the most infamous nightclub on the Jersey Shore, Karma became a household name thanks to MTV’s Jersey Shore. From fist-pumping chaos to fluorescent dance floors, Karma defined a wild era in Seaside nightlife. Located at 401 Boulevard, it finally closed after years of decline and was demolished in 2023.

From 6 a.m. until they cut him off, Howard Stern dominated the New York airwaves on 92.3 K-Rock. Starting in 1986 and running through his final terrestrial broadcast in 2005, Stern turned mornings into a full-contact sport—blasting through censors, skewering sacred cows, and redefining talk radio.

More than a music venue, the Brighton was a punk sanctuary. From local garage bands to national legends like The Misfits and Monster Magnet, it gave the Jersey Shore a real stage—gritty, loud, and defiantly underground. Founded by Greg Macolino, it stood for 25 years before closing in 2021 and being demolished in 2022.
