The memory

Opened in 1980 by nightlife king Art Stock, the Playpen in Sayreville, NJ transformed a fading Varsity Inn into a Jersey Shore mega-club. With two floors, multiple bars, flashing lights, and a booming sound system, it was a go-to for hard rock, hair metal, and wild nights. Everyone played there—or partied there—including Bruce Springsteen, who shocked the crowd with a surprise set in October ’94, just months before it closed. A Jersey legend, now on a shirt.
