Homestead Restaurant

The Homestead Restaurant was the undisputed crown jewel of the Ocean Grove boardwalk, standing for over sixty years as the definitive "Sunday best" dining destination for locals and summer tourists alike. Founded around 1915 by the Pappaylion family—Spiro and his legendary wife Hope, affectionately known as "Mrs. P"—the establishment was more than a restaurant; it was a seasonal institution that anchored the North End. Perched on pilings directly over the Atlantic, the white clapboard structure allowed patrons to dine to the rhythm of the waves crashing beneath their feet, offering a visceral connection to the sea that defined the pre-beach-replenishment era. The service was a masterclass in mid-century etiquette, overseen by the Pappaylions and later their daughter, Connie Hughes. The staff was famously comprised of out-of-state college students—the "Homestead Girls"—who lived in local "ramshackle" Victorians for the summer and underwent rigorous training to meet Mrs. P’s exacting standards. Every meal was a ritual, beginning with the signature chilled fruit cup topped with a scoop of orange sherbet and a sprig of mint, followed by servers using silver tongs to place warm corn sticks on bread plates. Despite the strict "no alcohol" policy mandated by the Grove’s Methodist roots, the Homestead maintained a sophisticated, "white tablecloth" atmosphere that drew families and dignitaries from across the state until its final season in 1978. Its closure marked the end of the boardwalk’s era of formal elegance, eventually giving way to the corporate identity of Perkins Pancake House before the entire site was tragically erased by the catastrophic North End fire in 2019.
